Highway 71

Having grown up in a little town in the middle of Minnesota on US Hwy 71, I learned that this 1500 mile route is the longest US highway that runs North and South. Starting at the Canadian border in International Falls, MN (also known as the nation's icebox) it meanders south on mostly as a two lane highway all the way to the southern part of Louisiana. It is the perfect highway for eco-tourism as there are many bike paths and short side-runs to interesting places and things to do. Motorcyclists that prefer to stay off the freeways also enjoy this route as it allows many opportunities to stop for gas or to stretch without taking a detour off of a main highway. The purpose of this website is to assist travelers in making plans on what sites and activities might be of interest to anyone that is considering taking this route for a road trip of any length. We've included a few loops that make for a perfect day trip or as an alternative to using the same road going back and forth. Some of the roadside attractions have been nominated by area chamber of commerce organizations or are listed as historical sites of interest by state  tourism departments. We didn't list every gas station and eating establishment along the way unless it is unusual or unique or has some historical significance. Whether you are riding, pedaling or even walking, US Highway 71 has a lot to offer. We hope you enjoy the trip!
